TWELVE

Jenny followed Kayla and her small children through the entrance of the small store. It sat at the end of their driveway and, if it hadn’t been for the sign, Jenny would have assumed it was just an out building. She guessed they probably didn’t get a whole lot of customers, and wondered if they advertised anywhere.

She smiled when she noticed a few of Paul’s windchimes hanging inside. She moved to touch one, causing a rich mournful sound to clang through the air.

“We keep those inside in the evening, but usually take them out during the day. They just go on those hooks on the front porch there.” Kayla pointed outside. “We alternate the windchimes with the hanging flower pots.”

“Would you like me to move the windchimes now?”

“Sure. You can do that.”

Jenny attempted to recall her dream as she placed each chime on its hook. She loved the sounds each one made. She was certain she’d cherish Paul’s gift as long as she lived. She hurried back inside to help Kayla.

Kayla held little Shiloh on her hip, but kept ahold of Judah’s hand.

“I bet it’s hard running this store with the little ones.”

“It is, which is why I’m grateful to have you here. Silas and Paul help out once in a while, but for the most part, it’s me and the kinner. I have a playpen in the back if I need to set them down, so that’s helpful. But they tend to get antsy cooped up in here. There’s no place for them to run around.”

“Poor babies.” She stuck out a pouty lip as she tweaked Shiloh’s plump cheek.

“Bailey’s a big help, but she’s gone most of the day.”

“Are you open every day?” She guessed not, since the store had been closed yesterday when she’d arrived.

“Nee. But maybe with you helping out here, we can expand our hours.”

Jenny nodded, then surveyed the outline of the store. “Have you thought of having a little bakery in here?” she suggested.

“Ach, not really. I’m too busy with the kinner and such to keep up with that. I do make a few things that we sell. My pot pie is pretty popular with our customers.”

“Well, I could help if you want to set up a bakery. I love to bake.” Jenny smiled. She eyed the empty glass cases near the side wall. “This would be perfect. It looks like you’re already set up for it. Did you used to have a bakery in here?”

“Not us, but maybe the former owners did. We only purchased this place about five years ago.”

“Are there any ovens in here?”

“Nee, just the stove in the house.”

“We could start out small. Just sell things like cookies, fry pies, things like that. Although I can make cakes and pies too.”

“That’s a good idea. Only, I’m not sure how they would sell, since we’re kind of off the beaten path.”

“Well, what if you offered fresh baked goods once or twice a week? You could put a sign out by the main road and that might drive traffic in.
